Terms of Service

Last updated: August 31, 2026

These terms govern your use of Beat the Book, a free-to-play sports prediction competition operated from Ontario, Canada. By creating an account or using the site, you agree to them. If you don't agree, don't use the site.

1. What Beat the Book is

Beat the Book is a free-to-play prediction game. Players make weekly predictions against real sportsbook-style odds and compete on season-long leaderboards for prizes.

You never deposit, wager, or withdraw money through this platform. No purchase is necessary to play or to win, and nothing you can buy improves your chances. Odds are displayed only to score predictions.

Beat the Book is not a sportsbook, betting exchange, or gambling service, and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any sports league, team, players' association, sportsbook, or gaming operator. We do not accept wagers, and we do not offer the odds shown here for use in placing wagers anywhere else.

2. Eligibility

You must be the greater of 18 years old or the age of majority where you live, and you must be a legal resident of Canada (excluding Quebec) or of the fifty United States or the District of Columbia. Residents of Quebec are not eligible. Use of the site is void where prohibited or restricted by law, and you are responsible for complying with the laws that apply to you.

One account per person. Creating multiple accounts, sharing an account, or entering on behalf of someone else is grounds for suspension and disqualification.

3. Your account

Accounts are created through a supported sign-in provider (currently Google). You are responsible for all activity under your account and for keeping your sign-in credentials secure — tell us promptly if you believe your account has been accessed without your permission.

Choose a username that isn't offensive, misleading, or impersonating; we may reclaim or reset usernames that violate this. You may delete your account at any time by emailing support@beathebook.com.

4. How the game works

Competition mechanics — weekly official picks, the units leaderboard, eligible markets, the odds rule, pushes, no-pick losses, and the late-join cutoff — are described on the Prizes & Rules and Official Contest Rules pages, which form part of these terms. Odds and lines are snapshotted when you make a pick and used to grade it, so later line movement never changes an existing pick.

5. Fair play and acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • use bots, scripts, or automation to place picks or scrape the site;
  • exploit bugs, odds errors, or settlement errors rather than reporting them;
  • create duplicate or fraudulent accounts, or manipulate leaderboards;
  • collude with other players to affect standings or prize outcomes;
  • harass other players, or post unlawful, infringing, or abusive content;
  • attempt to gain unauthorized access to the site, interfere with its operation, or circumvent any security or rate limit.

We may suspend or disqualify accounts, void affected picks, and withhold prizes where we reasonably believe these terms were broken.

6. Prizes

Prizes, eligibility, how winners are determined, the mandatory skill-testing question, and how prizes are claimed are set out in the Official Contest Rules. Prizes are non-transferable and have no cash alternative. You are responsible for any taxes on a prize you receive.

7. Settlement and disputes

Picks settle on the odds we posted at pick time and on official league results. We may correct scores and re-settle if we posted an error. You can raise a settlement dispute within 48 hours of grading by emailing support@beathebook.com. Our determination of results and standings is final, subject to your non-waivable rights under applicable law.

8. Content and intellectual property

The site, its design, code, text, graphics, and the Beat the Book name and logo are owned by us or our licensors and are protected by copyright and trademark law. We grant you a personal, limited, non-exclusive, revocable licence to use the site for its intended purpose. You may not copy, redistribute, or create derivative works from the site, or use our branding, without our written permission.

League, team, and player names and marks belong to their respective owners and are used only to identify real-world events. Odds data is supplied by a third-party provider under licence.

You keep ownership of anything you submit (such as your username). By submitting it you grant us a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to display it on the site — for example on leaderboards and public profiles — for as long as your account exists.

9. Third-party services

The site relies on third-party services for sign-in, hosting, odds data, email, and error monitoring, and may link to third-party sites. We don't control those services and aren't responsible for their content, availability, or practices. Your use of them is subject to their own terms.

10. Changes and availability

We may change the game, these terms, or the rules, and may add, pause, or end competitions. Material changes will be posted here with an updated date; continuing to use the site after a change means you accept it. We don't guarantee the site will always be available, uninterrupted, or error-free, and we may suspend it for maintenance.

11. Disclaimers

The site is provided “as is” and “as available.” To the fullest extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that odds, lines, scores, or results shown on the site are accurate, complete, or current, and nothing on the site is betting, financial, or investment advice.

12. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost picks, downtime, data loss, or third-party service failures (for example the odds feed, sign-in, email, or hosting).

Since no money is deposited or wagered, our total aggregate liability to you for all claims relating to the site is limited to the approximate retail value of any prize you were entitled to under the Official Contest Rules, or CAD $100 if no prize was owed.

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits our liability for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or for any other liability that cannot lawfully be excluded — including your non-waivable rights under the Ontario Consumer Protection Actor equivalent legislation where you live. Some jurisdictions don't allow certain exclusions, so parts of this section may not apply to you.

13. Indemnity

You agree to indemnify us against reasonable losses and costs arising from your breach of these terms, your misuse of the site, or your violation of any law or third-party right. This does not apply to the extent the loss was caused by us.

14. Suspension and termination

You may stop using the site and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or terminate your account if you break these terms or the contest rules, or if we reasonably need to in order to protect the site or other players. Where practical, we'll tell you why and give you a chance to respond. Sections that by their nature should survive termination — including sections 8, 11, 12, 13, and 15 — do.

15. Governing law and disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada applicable there, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules. You and we agree to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts located in Ontario, Canada — except that this does not deprive you of the protection of mandatory consumer-law rules of your own province, territory, or state, or of any right you have to bring a claim in a small-claims court where you live.

Before starting a formal proceeding, please contact us at support@beathebook.com so we can try to resolve the issue directly.

16. General

These terms, together with the Official Contest Rules, the Prizes & Rules page, and the Privacy Policy, are the entire agreement between you and us about the site. If any provision is found unenforceable, the rest stays in effect. Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver of it. You may not assign your rights under these terms; we may assign ours to a successor of the business. We are not liable for failures caused by events beyond our reasonable control. You agree to receive notices from us electronically, at the email address on your account or by posting on the site.
